Thanksgiving Birthdays

I have a friend and also a granddaughter whose birthdays tend to bracket Thanksgiving; one on the 21st of November and one on the 28th of November.  Every few years one of them has their birthday coincide with Thanksgiving and this year it was my friend.

My DT card for QKR Stampede was done for her and I hope she loves it as much as I did when I was making it.  Our new Anything Goes challenge starts today and I'd love it if you'd come and play with us this week.  The image is called "Birthday Bear" and it's available in either rubber or as a digi.

...Not even a Mouse

So it's nearly the middle of July, and definitely the middle of the year and I'm finally doing my first Christmas tag for the year!  It's 4" x 4" and the perfect size for the stamp.  The stamp is from Mo's Digital Pencil and I think it's the first one I ever got from Mo's.  I know I've had it a long time, maybe as much as 10 years, and I've used it for several cards over the years.  If you're not familiar with her delightful art, do go check them out!

A Barefoot Kind of Summer

We've had our first two days of temperatures in the 90s (F) and that's just to prepare us for the hot, hot, HOT days just over the horizon.  Today's card is my only salute to high temperatures since I really hate unbearable hot weather.  When it gets over 100, I regret living where I do.

But, for now, I love this darling little girl from Conie Fong.  She's a classic, barefoot, summer girl.  :-D

I colored with ProMarkers and gel inks, then cut the image and the frame with Bo Bunny dies, inlaying them when I adhered them to the dp background.  That paper is from my stash and I have no idea what company made it.

The ribbon is lavender and has metallic fibers running through it.  Because of the delicate detail in the die cut frame and the print in the dp, I decided that no further embellishment was needed.

O, Holy Night

This wonderful image is the freebie from the Progressive Challenge at The Outlawz for December.   It's by Star Stampz and is called "The Conductor."  It made me think of Christmas cantatas with choirs singing O, Holy Night!

I colored with ProMarkers and cut the image with a plain, rectangle die from QuicKutz.  I had a left over Bo Bunny cut frame which I colored with marker and added on top of the image.  Something about framing it that way made the image stand out.

I found a couple of scraps of white and gold, sparkly ribbon which I wrapped around the card front before applying the image.  I added one of my signature bows with the pearl.

Holiday Chaos - Shopping Humbug!

I know this is my third post of the day but the Holiday Chaos at Catch the Bug ends today and we have to have our projects posted within the next few hours.  I spent the morning sporadically getting this card made, interrupted by many other things that kept cropping up.  Now, in the middle of writing up this blog, I find out that my daughter is on her way over with my grandson and I'll delay one more time in order to visit with them.  :-D  Sorry, but being a Nana always comes first!

The image I used is the Friday Freebie from Bugaboo Stamps which we are supposed to use along with this BINGO board.

I used the diagonal from bottom left to top right: Plaid/ Die Cut/ Sentiment but I also used a Bugaboo image.  :-D

I colored with ProMarkers, then die cut the image and the frame with dies from Bo Bunny.  The plaid dp came from a stack by My Favorite Things.  I printed and hand cut the sentiment, inked the edges with red, and adhered it with dimensional dots.  The red bow is one of my hand-sewn, signature bows with a pearl.

Holiday Chaos at Catch the Bug - Day 2

This week there are going to be a few days with double posts and this is one of them.  It turns out that the week-long "Holiday Chaos" challenges at Catch the Bug are going on this week and I plan to play each day.  Today, the challenge is to use the sketch they provided.  I turned it on end because of the shape of the image I wanted to use.

Do you remember the version of "Jingle Bells" done with the cats meowing the melody?  I'm sure these are the three feline, musical stars who did that recording.  lol

I colored those three singing cats with ProMarkers, cut the image with a simple rectangle die from Tonic Studios, and cut a frame for it out of sparkly CS with a die from Bo Bunny.  The plaid papers are from Your Next Stamp.  I cut the sentiment words with a Die Versions die.  With all that plaid, the only embellishment needed was one of my hand-sewn, signature bows.  The punched dot in the center of it is covered with sparkle gel ink but, sadly, it doesn't show in the photo.

Light in the Window

The alphabet prompt today at Beccy's Place is the letter "L" and I used one of Beccy's Seasonal Window images to make my card.  This is the winter window and it gave me another chance to focus on being home for the holidays - Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I played with a pre-colored image but used a Lemon ProMarker to cast the glow on the window pane and a pale green to color the candle.  I also used a couple of gray ProMarkers to enhance the bricks a bit, and used a white gel pen on the snow.

I added Lemon yellow, Nuvo Crystal Drops to the flame which gave it both shine and texture.  I know that's hard to see but if you click on the photo to enlarge it, you'll get a good look at it.

The image piece was cut on my Fiskars paper cutter, then I distressed the edges.  I cut scrap pieces of gray CS with a Bo Bunny die and made Layers with them, adding the image piece on top.  I printed the sentiment, getting two more Ls, Light and Leading.  The bow is one of those I sew up by the dozens using white ribbon, then I dye them the color I want with ProMarkers.  The bow is the same color as the candle, and that complementary pop of color in the bow makes the candle more visible to the eye.

Gingerbread Christmas

Ok, it's now Day 8 at the 30 Days of Christmas cards at Beccy's Place and the challenge prompt is the letter "G" so what could be more inline for the holidays than Gingerbread?  These darling Gingerbread people are images from Beccy's Place.

I incorporated the colors from the challenge

The two images were merged before printing and then colored with ProMarkers.  I cut the image and the Green mat with dies from Tonic Studios.  I had already decided on a Gatefold card, since that added one  more G to my list.

A Gatefold card is simple to make.  I started with a piece of CS 5.5 inches wide by 11 inches long.  I left 5.5 inches in the middle and scored a line on each side of that to make the flaps which fold in and are the Gate.  That made my card a 5.5 inch square but you can make it any size by adjusting the size of your beginning piece.  I've made them the size of an A1 card all the way up to an A7.

The background dp came from a Bo Bunny stack and I trimmed them to fit the flap size.  I added the image piece by adhering it to the left side only.   I found a holiday rosette in my stash of holiday embellishments and added it to the lower, right hand flap.

The gingerbread people are also a salute to one of my favorite childhood memories.  Every Christmas there would be a present under the tree from my Grammy (for whom this blog is named!) and it always contained some kind of gingerbread - a tiny house, a gingerbread man, gingerbread cut into candy canes or stars.  I looked forward to opening that present above all others every year.  :-D  It was a sad day when Grammy could no longer bake due to her declining health.  I still miss her although she's been gone nearly 50 years now and the smell of gingerbread always makes me think of her.

Beccy's Place Color Challenge

It turns out that today (Day 5 of the 30 Days of Christmas) is one of the days when Beccy tosses us a theme instead of using a letter of the alphabet as a prompt.  The challenge colors are: custard, moss, cocoa, and bisque.

I read through the Day 5 post at Beccy's, then went back to bed for a while since this flu hasn't gone completely.  When I got up again, I did this CAS card using these two really cute stockings from Beccy's Place.

I based my design on the sketch from
The House that Stamps Built, but flipped side to side.

Last year during her 30 Days of Holiday Cards, Beccy gave us a tutorial on recoloring a pre-colored image and I decided to try it.  I chose this image of the two stockings because the original colors were as close to what I needed as possible.  I also adjusted the pre-coloring to make it as light as possible before I printed it, editing it with my Word software.

I used my ProMarkers to add a golden orange to the red, making it bisque, and turned the green darker and more mossy with a "Moss" Promarker.  The yellow in the striped stocking only needed the addition of a "Mustard" ProMarker to change it to the custard shade.

To get the "cocoa," I used a Bo Bunny die to cut the frame out of CS and I inset the image into it.  The background paper (also Bo Bunny) was a delightful bisque color and worked perfectly as a complementary background for the image.  Both of those went onto a white card base and, beyond that, I left it very CAS.

Christmas Candle

This is it!  Fourth post of the day and the last one.  :-D

One last DT card for another new monthly challenge and this time it's at the SheepSki Designs blog!  We have a theme this month, "Anything Christmas."  Since you are a bit over 6 weeks away from Christmas (yes, it's true, and I don't know how that happened either!), it's a great time to add a couple more holiday cards to your stash.  You know you're going to need them.

I used one of Andrea's newer images, Christmas Candle, and it really inspired me to use traditional colors.  It reminds me of all the holiday references to candles in the windows for those who are making their way home, hence the sentiment.,

I colored with ProMarkers and Copics and used dies from QuicKutz to cut the image and the mat behind it, plus the aperture in the card front.  I added golden Nuvo Crystal Drops to the centers of the poinsettias.  The leaves I used for the 'wreath' frame were cut with a Cheery Lynn die.  The background paper was in my stash of Christmas papers and I've had it for so long I'm not absolutely sure but I think it came from one of my Bo Bunny stacks.

Forest Witch

It seems that even the woodland animals celebrate Halloween!   Over the weekend, I shared a card showing how the fairies disguise themselves as toadstools to avoid the witches and goblins on Halloween but today I'm sharing another delightful image from Ching-Chou Kuik showing a gentle witch of  the woodlands.  I guess not all of them are scary or dangerous.  At least, the squirrels aren't afraid.  :-D

I used colors from Outlawz Colors.

I colored the image with ProMarkers and did the sky and ground with water colors.  I cut the image with an Unbranded oval die.  The purple piece is a CS scrap, cut into a rectangle with a simple die from Spellbinders, then framed with a Bo Bunny die cut piece, also a scrap.  Everything was layered onto a scrap of orange CS, including the sentiment, and that layered piece was put onto a kraft card base.

I added mesh for texture, then found a scrap of purple ribbon which I wrapped around the card front.  I tied the purple, gingham check, ribbon into a bow and added it on top of the sheer ribbon.

Sasayaki Witch

I'm finally getting my card made for the Progressive Challenge at Sasayaki Glitter.  The image is one of the most adorable witches this season.  :-D

I colored with ProMarkers, then cut the image with a Bo Bunny die.    I matted the image with a wonky stitched die from CUTplorations.   I printed the sentiment, hand cut it, and matted it with a scrap of purple CS.

The jack-o-lantern doily is die cut from glittered paper and the Happy Bat die cut was sent to me by my friend, Christi, who loves Halloween almost as much as I do.  :-D  Thanks so much, Christi!

Thanksgiving Maiden

If you visit my blog regularly or are a follower, you undoubtedly know that I love progressive challenges.  I found one that's new to me although it's not a new challenge.  I popped over to the online store at Cute as a Button, bought the image for this challenge (at half off), and sat down to make this card.  I could have gotten the image free simply by sending an email and requesting it but since it was on sale at half off, I did what I could to support the artist by buying it.  After all, I'll get the next one free.  :-D

I colored the image with ProMarkers and cut it with a die from Bo Bunny.  The delicate frame is also cut with another die from that same set and that brown CS was simply a scrap from the basket on my craft table.  I layered the image and frame pieces onto marbled-beige CS and trimmed that to fit the card base.

I took a scrap of that trimmed off CS and printed the sentiment onto it, then die cut it (again, Bo Bunny die) but I had to cut more than once, moving the die each time to get the size I wanted since the die was much larger than the sentiment.  The brown CS behind the sentiment was the inside leftover from cutting the frame for the image but I cut that piece with the same die I used on the sentiment.  The cut piece shows you the actual size of the die, no adjustment made to the cut that time.

As a final touch on this otherwise CAS card, I tied a simple bow using brown jute cord and added it above the sentiment piece.

Last week's somewhat lower temperatures are already a thing of the past so we're still waiting on autumn here in my neck of the woods.  Weather predictors are saying we will be back to 100F either today or tomorrow and at 99F for the rest of the week, through and including the weekend.  Maybe this is just what we use to call "Indian Summer" back when I was a child.  I can hope, right?

Sketch Saturday Guest Designer

This is my fourth (and final) card as a Guest Designer for Sketch Saturday and I'm having so much fun with the sketches and sponsors.  This week, we're sponsored by Little Miss Muffet and I've used their darling "Pippa" image.   She definitely looks like she's ready to conquer her first day at school !  Don't tell her it could also be used for someone's birthday.  lol

Here's the sketch for this week but I turned it a quarter turn and reversed the layers because that better fit my image shape.

Here's my card:

I used ProMarkers to color sweet Pippa, then cut her with a Bo Bunny die.  I used another die from that same set to cut the delicate, pink frame and inlaid the two.  The dp rectangle came from my scrap basket and didn't even need trimming; it was the perfect size as it was.

I printed and hand cut the sentiment, then began looking for a single embellishment.  I thought about a flower but decided on the two-tone, bowtie, bow.  I'm loving the monochromatic pink of this card.

Have yourselves a great little weekend and feel free to come play with us this week.  Happy Crafting.  NanaConnie

Embroidery Butterflies

This is going to be a really fast post this morning.  I'm back to machine embroidered things which I can use on cards and this morning, it's pink butterflies!

Pink and silver seemed a great combo for a completely feminine card which is still on the CAS side.  The die cuts are done with Bo Bunny dies, and the scalloped dp is from the scrap basket.  I layered everything onto a pink card base and then added a silver, die cut sentiment (Unbranded die.)

Beach Weather

Well, they said the really hot weather would arrive last weekend but we jumped from 84F on Thursday to 100F on Saturday and 102F on Sunday!  I know it'll get hotter over the upcoming summer but an almost 20 degree jump over a single weekend nearly wiped me out.  I'm ready for a month at the beach!

The image from Bugaboo Stamps was in my collection and I grabbed it to use for the Stella Says Sketch challenge (see below.)

Here's the sketch I followed.

I use ProMarkers to color the image and added some sparkle gel ink to her sunglasses.  Unfortunately, it doesn't show in the photo so it looks like I did nothing.  :(

I cut the image with a Bo Bunny die which included the delicate frame that allowed me to inset the image.  The patterned, blue, dp is a left over scrap from a Recollections stack and the chevron dp is also a scrap but I can't remember the maker.  The textured, brown CS came from the scrap pile.  Come to think of it, even the image was printed onto a scrap.

The bow is one of the wrapped-burlap bows I make but I 'dyed' this one with a purple ProMarker to match her bikini and flip flops.  Overall, this is a pretty CAS design but the dp patterns and fancy die cut make it look much more complex.

Time for May Flowers

We've had the April Showers (more than we usually get where I live) and now I want to see the May Flowers.   My garden is growing strong and healthy plants and in another month, we'll be harvesting the first of the tomatoes and maybe even a summer squash or two.  Watermelons should follow in early July, and it's beginning to look like we may have a bumper crop of beans and peas.

But I want flowers!  :-D  This is the best I can have right now, I guess.

The image is from Bugaboo Stamps and I colored with ProMarkers.  The frame was cut with a die from Amy's Designs and I layered it directly onto the image.  That entire thing was placed onto a scrap of dp from a Bo Bunny stack.  It has a hole in it from a die cut done for another project but it's hidden underneath the image.

I added grosgrain ribbon and 'dyed' my handmade bow with a marker to get just the shade of golden yellow I wanted.  The sentiment was printed, hand cut, and inked on the edges before adding it to the top of the card front.  I took one of the flower piece negatives which fell out after cutting and added it on top of the ribbon.

As a final touch of embellishment, I added tiny pearls to each of the large flowers in the die cut frame. My handmade bow already had a pearl.

Welcome Home

I'm really into birdhouses this week but I'm still trying to convince Mother Nature that it's time for Spring.  :-D  We start a new challenge today at QKR Stampede and our theme is always Anything Goes.  This sweet little image came from QKR and is called "Birdhouse and Vines."

I colored the image with ProMarkers and polychromos pencils, then cut it with a Bo Bunny die.  The dark green frame is also a Bo Bunny cut.  The background paper is embossed with a Swiss Dots folder but I had added embossing ink to the dot side before I ran the folder through the Cuttlebug.  When it came out, I sprinkled it with glittery EP and heat embossed it.  It had to be trimmed to the size I wanted and I mounted the image pieces onto it.  This is a new technique for me and I'm going to be doing more of it.

I printed the sentiment and mounted it onto a scrap of the embossed paper.  Finally, I added bakers' twine and the die cut, burlap, butterfly.

Cutting Out Snowflakes

Many of you know that I live out in California where we have very little snow except in the Sierra Nevada range, those high mountains that run like a backbone up the length of California, into Oregon and Washington, and even on into western Canada.  That's how I love snow - up in the mountains where one can choose to visit for a day or even a weekend of playing in it, and then return to the valley where it's dry and warm and skid-free.  :-D

I adore Penny Black stamps, especially the cats and the hedgehogs, and this one always makes me think of California winters since, if we want snowflakes, we pretty much have to cut them from paper.

I based this on the sketch at Sketch Saturday
turned sideways and
kept even cleaner and more simple
by leaving out one layer.

I stamped the image, colored it with my ProMarkers, and cut it with a Bo Bunny die.  The teal-blue frame was cut with another die which is part of that same set.  I added glitter to the snowflake and set it aside to dry.

I found two scraps of teal gingham dp, trimmed them and added them diagonally across the card front.   I layered on the image and the frame, then printed the sentiment, hand cut and matted it, and added it above the image.

I used no embellishments because I want this card to be very CAS.  I'm sending it to one of my grandsons who lives in snow country, relishing the fact that he has to shovel snow and I don't!  lol

Butterflies and Berries

This is another of the new images which were part of my challenge win from Ching-Chou Kuik.  This is my first time coloring it and I'm thrilled by the result!  It's called "Butterflies and Berries."

I colored the butterflies, berries, and her face with my ProMarkers, then used water color pencils and gamsol for her dress, hair, and the sky/background.  Then I thought about how I wanted to cut out the image.  I dug around in my huge stash of dies, found one by Bo Bunny which was about the right size and shape for the image but it had lots of internal filigree bits which would cut into the image.  So, I laid the die on top of the image, drew around the outside of it with a pencil, then hand cut the shape with scissors.

I wanted to frame the image so I used my newest die set from Spellbinders (thank you to Santa!) for the first time and I can tell you that die set is going to get lots of use!  The frame is cut from textured paper which was a leftover scrap of 12 x 12 scrapbooking paper.  After I added all of that to an ivory card, I found a 6 inch scrap of sheer, gold, ribbon begging to be used so I tied a tiny bow and added it to the top.
