2 Year Old's Birthday

I have a great granddaughter who is turning 2 at the end of this month, and although I've not yet met her (being in different states and nearly 1,000 miles apart), she knows that her NanaConnie is the one who sends hand made cards.  This is the card I'm sending this time.

It's another card put together with all die cuts and this time, I used some negative portions of dies, things which either fall our of the die's design or what's left behind when the original die cut piece has already been used for another project.

On this one, I stared by using my 'Linen' EF to dry emboss the card front.  The sentiment is the 'left behind' negative which I just couldn't bear to toss out.  It's from a Sizzix - Tim Holtz set of word dies.   The 'happy' and the 'birthday' are individual dies which I laid out, cut, and used on another birthday card but the way I laid them out meant that I had a scrap which could be trimmed into an interesting shape and used for this card.

The giraffe die is from Cuts, and I cut them from orange and pink CS, then layered them onto the card front for a double exposure look.  The little stars are bits which fell out of a Hero Arts background die and I kept them for future use instead of throwing them away.  The final touch was to add the teeny-tiny gems (Recollections) to the center of the stars.

Pretty quick and easy but a card which will be loved by a 2 year old.   :-D

Vintage Thoughts

The title of this post should give you a clue that there is a vintage creation being presented today but there's so much more to the story!  So pour yourself a cuppa or something cool if it's hot where you are, and settle in for a bit of a read.

Unlike most really hip crafters, I'm rather new to browsing on PINterest, much preferring to be in the craft room than at the computer.  :-D  I do very little on social media sites other than FB things required by the DTs on which I serve.  I don't have any Instagram, Twitter, Flick'r, Tick Tock, or whatever accounts and I don't waste my rather budgeted creative time with any of those things.

However, I did take a glance at PINterest when I was looking for photos of some particular flowers to figure out how I wanted to color an image of them.  Did you know if you use search terms which are too general you will get millions and millions of hits?  OK, you probably knew that but remember, I don't spend my time searching PINterest.  lol  Anyway, one link led to another and suddenly I found myself on a place called "Deviant Art" and found some rather lovely vintage photos of flowers, bouquets, and tussy mussies.

Tucked in among them, for no apparent rhyme or reason, were several sepia toned, vintage photos of people.  I was dumbstruck to see one photo which I recognized instantly!  In the interests of giving full and appropriate 'credit' to whomever now has the 'rights' to it (on Deviant Art the photo was credited to "peterpicture,") I have no idea who or what they may be and am in no way associated with them, nor do I know how they got access to it or ownership of it.  BUT, the reason I recognized the photo is because it's one of my mother, taken at a professional photography studio when she was a few weeks away from turning 16!  As was the custom back in the 1920s, girls had professional photos taken at age 16 as a way of saying they were now "coming of age."

My mother gave me this photo of her when I turned 16.  I kept it on my dresser for many years until it finally got relegated to the 'keepsakes' box when I was in my late 40s.  Interesting side note - I had grown up in the town where my mother had been born and raised, and had been told throughout my entire childhood how much I looked like my mother when she was ... insert whatever age I was at that time.  It never really impressed me all that much, partly because I was a child but also because I was the youngest sibling and my mother turned 42 the year I was born so looking at her at whatever age she was then, I really couldn't see the similarity.  But this photo of her at age 16 could have been me at 16 (aside from the obvious age of the photo)!  Edited to add: In response to Bunny's comment - I can't put my hands on any photos of myself at age 16, 17, 18, or anything close to it, else I would have put one up for comparison.  :-D

So, after all that, let me share the photo by showing you what I did with it.  My oldest granddaughter asked me if I would turn the photo into something she could keep on her desk or mantle piece so I made a large, tent fold style card.  And yes, if she had that hairstyle and was dressed in vintage clothing, it would look a lot like her.  :-D

Friends at the Beach

OK, so not many of us are heading to the beaches these days, even with the weather as hot as it is.  In my part of the world, we're suffering through day 11 in a row of temps over 100 degrees F and the beach is where we should be!   Since I can't be there in person, I'm going in spirit and showing off my latest DT card for the August challenge which just started at Jan's Digi Stamps.

These images (ladies and drinks) plus the sentiment are all from Jan's "Beach Friends" set and for the design, I decided to try a different kind of rocker card.  This is a basic tent style card with the die cut, rocker part attached at the bottom.  I cut a full circle, then cut that in half and attached one half to the front and the other to the back of the tent card.

Images & sentiment merged and printed
Colored w/ Tim Holtz distress markers

Birthday Giraffes

I have a dear friend who moved away last year (I mean really away - like 350 miles away!) and she loves giraffes.  For as many years as we've known each other, I've made her birthday cards with giraffe images on them.  I decided just because she lives in another city now was no reason to change that pattern.  I just had to make her card flat and easy to mail.

I colored with ProMarkers, then cut the image with a simple rectangle die from QuicKutz.  The card base is kraft CS, and I added an embossed scrap to the background.  I inked the edges of both the image piece and the embossed rectangle.

The ribbon was in my stash and I used one of my signature, hand-sewn bows which I had 'dyed' with a yellow ProMarker.  Ribbons and bows are definitely my favorite embellies!  I put a tiny drop of Liquid Pearls on the bow to hide the thread I used when wrapping the center of the bow.  I also added three, flat, metal brads to the top corner.

I put the birthday sentiment on the inside, made with die cut letters and words.  The letters were made with a Memory Box die and the word "birthday" was cut with a Tim Holtz/Sizzix die to which I added loose glitter.

Birthday Wishes

I know you've already seen my DT card for SheepSki Designs if you visited on Wednesday, but this morning I'm sharing a card with a stunning (and fun to color) image from SheepSki called "Peonies" because SheepSki is sponsoring the challenge over at Crafty Friends and I was lucky enough to be a Guest Designer.  :-D  The theme for the Crafty Friends challenge this fortnight is "Use 2 or more dies."

I pulled all my colors from the inspiration board

I colored the peonies with ProMarkers, then used a die from Sue Wilson to cut the image.  I trimmed one end of it so that there would be a straight side on the left.  I chose a golden yellow CS for the background and cut the butterflies into it with a Memory Box die.

I mounted that onto a kraft card base, then added the image and one of my signature, hand sewn, bows with a tiny pearl.  The bow was 'dyed' with a ProMarker to match the color of the sentiment.  The sentiment was cut with Tim Holtz word dies by Sizzix.

This is one of those fun cards where I get to combine ribbon (for the bow) and flowers (in the image) and still have a flat card for easy mailing.  If I have to choose between ribbons and flowers as embellies, I'll almost always go with ribbon because the bulk of flower embellies make cards difficult to mail.  When I do use dimensional flowers, I almost always am giving the card personally, not mailing it.

Persian Cat Says He's the Birthday Present !

Here at Crafting with an Attitude we love seeing attitude in any form!  For our latest challenge, which starts today, we're being sponsored by Some Odd Girl and I fell in love with this "Angry Persian" image.  Look at the attitude showing in that expression!

I used ProMarkers to color the image, then cut it with a hexagonal die from QuicKutz.  The aqua frame is also cut with another die from that set.  I made a shaped card by cutting the base with another Quickutz die.

I printed and cut the small sentiment at the bottom of the image, trimming the shape to fit in with the hexagon.  The "happy birthday" sentiment was cut with a Tim Holtz - Sizzix die.  There was already so much going on with the borders of the card, I decided that it needed no embellishment beyond that created by the die cutting.

A Thank You for Di

I'm sharing a Thank You card today, made specifically to thank Di, who runs the Pixie's Snippets Playground, and it's important to include Parsnip and Dudley in that, too, I suppose, so that they don't feel slighted and run wild.  Di just celebrated the end of the 8th year at the Playground, and she's been running it for the last seven.  Darnell has organized a large blog hop for those of us who wanted to thank her and you can find the hop here if you're interested.

Following the main rule of the Playground, I did this entire card using scraps of this and that, including a left over bit of CS for the card base.  The flowery background is a snippet of oriental origami paper and the size of it controlled the actual size of the card (approximately 3" X 5".)

I found a scrap of cornflower blue CS and layered onto it the back of a left-over negative of a "thank you" die cut (Tim Holtz for Sizzix.)  Because the piece between the 't' and the 'h' was missing, I cut a tiny, thin, bit of dark burgundy CS which was hanging about on the desk and used it.  It doesn't match exactly but was the best I could do with what was available.

The flower was cut from a scrap of white paper; I embossed the petals with a stylus and added a white sequin in the middle.

I've been a bit absent from the Playground during the holidays (and again most of this month) due to all the time spent with family and the rather long process of sorting things to be relocated.  I have missed making 'snippets' projects during that time.  What fun to have used nothing but snippets for this entire card!  Enjoy, Di, and thank you so much for keeping things going at the Playground.  :-D

Hat Stands

Once again, I'm playing along in the Rick St. Dennis Progressive Challenge at Sparkle and Glitter.  I love this image with the vintage hats and stands.  Can't you just see the Gay 90s Lady packing her best hats for a trip to Paris?

I started with the sketch from Sweet Sketch Wednesday.

I used a combination of ProMarkers and Tim Holtz Distress Markers to color the image and used a die to cut it.  I matted it with pale pink CS and punched the corners.  The background papers are beautifully textured and both are from pads by DCWV, chosen to pick up the soft yellows and neutrals in the image.

For embellishment, I chose a scrap of left over ribbon, and layered the sentiment onto it.  The die cut leaves (Cheery Lynn) were in my stash from some previous project so I used those and finally added the butterfly and gem.
