Herding Chickens

      My first born grandson is now raising three children of his own and I know he'll understand this sentiment perfectly!  lol  This is the 3rd Father's Day card I've shared in a week and it may be my favorite so far.  I'm still working on one more which I'll send to my son (who is my eldest child.)  

     The image is from a vintage, digital coloring book, reduced in size to fit an A2 card.  I started with the image in grayscale but changed it to blue with my computer software before I printed it.  I cut the image and the top sentiment with QuicKutz dies.  The lower sentiment was cut with an Avery Elle die.  The plaid paper came from that Paper Studio stack which is still on my crafting desk and which seems to have so many wonderful masculine papers in it.

Bookshelf Treasures

      If you're a person who adores books, despite everything now being on electronic readers or in audio formats, you'll understand why a full bookshelf can feel like a treasure trove.  I've loved books and reading since I was a child, when bedtime meant one parent or the other reading a story.  As I grew older, I loved the feel of the paper pages, the hard cover, and the creaky binding as one opened and closed the book.  No electronic reader can replace those things.

     This delightful fantasy image of a pixie perched on a shelf with book in hand intrigued me right away and I had to use it for a card which I'll be sending to my youngest granddaughter, who just moved several states away for college.  I miss her already!

     I thought a monochrome, sepia-brown would work and stamped the image in coffee brown ink.  I added shading using colored pencil.  I cut it with a Tonic Studios die, then sponged the sides and corners using the same ink pad.  I found the striped dp in a DCWV "Basics" stack and chose it because it made the image pop off the background while maintaining the monochrome color combo.  The hand sewn bow is the only embellishment.

Dance 'til ...

      A few days ago, I told you about the inspiration I got from seeing a live dance competition and how that resulted in a new batch of cards featuring dance themes.  (See this post for the full story.)  Today, I want to share 2 of the latest dance cards.

     This first one is delightfully romantic and also vintage, reflecting a feel of the 1920s.  The digi image is pre-colored and I found it online after doing a search for "dancers."  There is no way to credit the artist because no information was given about who drew it.  If anyone recognizes it, please let me know and I'll edit this post to give proper credit.

     I'm going to give this to a friend who wants to use this as an Anniversary card.

     I cut the image with a rectangle die from QuicKutz.  I used a Fiskars punch to round the corners, and cut the gold frame with an Unbranded die.  I embossed the frame with my "Linen" EF.  I added no ribbon or bow or gems, feeling that the delicacy of the filigree frame was enough embellishment.

     This second card was made for the recipe challenge at Crafty Chefs.  That challenge has been reactivated due to the efforts of  Monica of Sunshine Creativity (bless you, my friend!) who has given us a much simplified recipe this month.  Only 2 ingredients: die cuts & a sentiment.

     This is not a challenge for a prize.  It's open to any kind of project providing you use the recipe ingredients, and it's there purely for the fun of challenging ourselves and sharing our results with friends.  If that sound like your kind of challenge, come join the Crafty Chefs on the Facebook page and play along.

     This image was printed on water color paper and I used water color paints to color it.  The background was 'aged' with a beige ProMarker but the text is part of the image.  The pink frames were cut with Tonic Studios dies.  I cut the larger one into 2 pieces and left the 2 diagonal corners slightly open.  The ivy leaves came from a Sue Wilson die and the sentiment was printed and cut with an Avery Elle die.  I used beige CS to make the card base because I wanted an aged look but also wanted contrast with the white leaves and sentiment.

Sunflowers or Dahlias?

      The image I used today is a new one from Conie Fong called "Sunflower Bouquet."  But I was in the mood for Spring and for a monochromatic card so I treated the sunflowers as if they were dahlias and discovered that the image was very versatile!   I can use this in summer and again in fall for cards which have a more appropriate color scheme for those seasons.  :-D

Baby Dragon Adventures

     Baby dragons are the most curious creatures ever and each new thing they encounter is a complete adventure in itself !   Purple leaves are amazing and watching them drift on a breeze is reason for giggles or even outright laughter.  :-D

     This sweet image is from Whimsy Stamps and the card will eventually find it's way into my eldest granddaughter's mailbox because she adores dragons (as do I!)

Orange and White Halloween

     I took to heart the challenge theme at Double D - to use nothing but orange and white on a project with an allowable neutral for a sentiment.  So, did I choose something easy like a sunflower image or leaves, or just a focal sentiment done in orange on a white background?  No, I chose an image from Mo's Digital Pencil, complete with Little Witch Henrietta and her farm kitten sitting there in the pumpkin patch.  What could I possibly do with just orange and white?  lol

     I used 9 different shades of orange ProMarkers and Copics, everything from Pale Orange to Deep Mango.  Nobody ever said I took the easy road to the destination!  What do you think?  Can you find the patch job I had to do?

Grayscale to Black and White Monochromatic

     I just had to do another AuroraWings sprite for their "Black and White with or without a Pop of Color" challenge.  I enjoyed the one I did last week so much that I browsed through my extensive collection of AW images and found this one which I thought would work perfectly.

     I colored with ProMarkers and watercolors, then cut the image with old decorative scissors.  How many of you still have decorative edge scissors?   Come on, fess up - no crafter ever threw out any tools which still works!

     The black frame is cut with a die from Spellbinders.  Everything is put onto an embossed (Linen folder) white card front.  I printed and added the sentiment after hand cutting it and inking the edges.  I really wanted to leave it fairly simple so I added only the black bow with a tiny pearl.

One Fuzzy, Purple, Monster

     So, I'm playing with this fun image from the Limited Runs Progressive Challenge this month, using my favorite periwinkles and lavenders, when a grandchild looking over my shoulder says, "Why are you coloring ugly monsters? "  I'm wasn't sure that I agreed with that assessment but I did go back and change the sentiment, discarding the one I had originally planned, substituting this one instead.  :-D

     I think he's adorable - and definitely loveable!    I used my ProMarkers to color him and cut him out with a die from Spellbinders.  I inked the outer edges of the die cut to make a "frame" and layered it onto three different papers, all scraps from my basket of leftovers.

     I know the middle strip looks almost black but it's actually deep purple with a slight pattern in it.  Blame the photographer!  The bottom strip is embossed and glittered.  I added the metallic, silver ribbon and called it finished.

     I'm hoping the weather where you are is considerably cooler than what we have out here on the West Coast of the US.  We have an incredible, high-pressure system just plunked down on top of us and we have already broken high heat records two days in a row.  One of those records went back to 1946 and we broke it by 2 degrees.  The weather folks say temps of 107 to 114 are very likely to last another 10 to 12 days.  Can you believe they were looking at the 7 day forecast and said that on Saturday we might get a "cool down" to 101 degrees?  You can imagine what the temperatures are like before Saturday comes around!

Coy Kittens

     A really quick post this morning because I'm leaving here very early, will be gone most of the day (much to the dismay of my own two feline fur babies!) and must get this posted.  I'm adding yet another birthday card to my stash and, because I didn't really have anyone specific in mind when I was making it, it's done in monochromatic neutrals.  This is an old stamp from CDS, no longer available because they're no longer in business.  But it is a sweet image and worth using over and over.

     The die cut frame was done with an Unbranded die.  I backed it with a scrap of tan CS.  The polka dot paper came from a stack by Recollections and was a scrap on my table with a hole in it from another die cut I had done but since the hole was going to be covered with the kittens, that didn't matter.  Nobody can tell it isn't a full piece of paper.

     The bow (ribbon from Really Reasonable Ribbon) is hand-tied with the help of my bow maker.  The sentiment is printed, hand cut, and applied over the image.

Time Began in a Garden

     Hello and welcome to June!  How did we get to almost half way through this year?  Time is flying by.  Goodness, this month all the kids will be out of school, summer will officially begin (winter in the Southern Hemisphere), the days will begin getting shorter (longer down under), and before you know it, we'll all be scrambling to do our holiday cards.  :-D

     But for this morning, this is the first of three posts I have for 1st of the Month DT cards and this one is for the "Anything Goes with a Critter" challenge at 2 Crafty Critter Crazies.  Our sponsor is Sparkle n Sprinkle and they provided digi images for each of us to use.  I'm using "Garden Silhouette" and I love how easily it lent itself to a CAS design.

     No coloring on this one at all.  Each piece is printed, fussy cut, and layered onto the card front.  I used various thicknesses of dimensional dots or tape, the thickest of which is on the sentiment.  I finished it by adding a black bow for embellishment.

Empty Mailbox

     I got an image a few weeks ago from Beccy's Place and am so in love with it!   In a way, it's kind of sad and nostalgic because happy mail so rarely arrives in our actual mailboxes anymore.  Everything is email or text message, or the occasional fax (and even those are dying out!)  I've done half a dozen cards with it, using different color combos each time and you'll see two or three of them over the next couple of months.  This first one is done in monochrome blues.

I based my design on the sketch from

     I used watercolor pencils and ProMarkers to color this one, then cut it with a die from Spellbinders.  I also cut the blue background with the same die and inlaid the image into it.  I added the sentiment and then wrapped the card front with sheer ribbon.

     The butterflies are cut with a die from Press Cut and the leaves are die cut from three different shades of blue CS (Cheery Lynn die.)   That Cheery Lynn die is probably my favorite small die of all time.  I remember being concerned about the cost of it when I first debated buying it because, up to that point, I had pretty much only used framing dies.  I decided to order it and I think I have used it more than any other small die I own.  Why did I even hesitate?  lol  Once I tried using it on something other than green CS (being so literal minded at that time), I discovered exactly how versatile it is, not only with flowers but by itself or layered with multiple shades as I did here.

A Silly Stack of Pigs

     We start a new challenge today over at QKR Stampede and our theme this week is "Autumn Leaves."  That's so appropriate for an early fall card but you know my odd sense of humor -- I had to something a bit different and funny.  :-D  I started by choosing Digi 16913 "Stacked Pigs" as my main image and used a monochrome/ neutral color combo I found at City Crafter (see below.)

     This is really a very simple card, intended to be masculine.  Since our challenge theme involves 'leaves', I also used the Digi 3901 "Leaf"  and printed it several times in different sizes.  All the leaves and the pigs were colored with a combination of my ProMarkers and a few Copics.

     I hand cut everything, including the silly sentiment, then added everything to a kraft card base.  I matted the sentiment and the pigs with black CS and mounted the pigs on dimension dots.  As a final touch, I added the bow which originally had been white but I 'dyed' it with a ProMarker.

Framed Butterflies

     This is my second post as a GD at Scrapy Land and we have a new challenge starting today with a theme of "Emboss It," either dry or heat embossing.  While I usually do dry embossing, this time I decided to do heat embossing so that I could try some really new, glittery EP that I got from Sparkle n Sprinkle.  As promised in my first Scrapy Land post two weeks ago, this card is much more complex and fancy than my first card which was very much CAS.  :-D

     For this card, I used a die set by Sue Wilson called "Delicate Garden Frame."  There are a total of six dies in the set and I used them all to get the different layers (there are seven if you count the card base) and three of the layers are mounted on pop dots for some dimension.  The papers are from Stampin' Up.

     I cut the butterflies and then heat embossed them with "Cerulean Star" glittery EP.  I used a Versamarker pen on the darker flowers in the frame and heat embossed them with the same EP.   In the center of each of those flowers, I glued one of the tiniest flowers and added a dot of glitter to their centers.

     The ribbon was in my stash and I tied the bow, then next to it I added the three tiny flowers with glittered centers.

Bunny Love

     This is the fourth new release set from MHK Designs this month and it's called "Bunny Love."  There are three separate images (most of which work well for spring or Easter) and four sentiments included in the set.  If you scroll all the way to the bottom of this post, you'll see a photo of the complete set.  Here's my card using the Bunny with Lily image.

     This is a pretty CAS card design.  I used ProMarkers to color the image and cut it with a die from Spellbinders.  I also cut the mat with another larger die from that same set.  The sentiment was printed and die cut, but hand trimmed along the bottom.

     I used a Cuttlebug embossing folder on the green CS and chose to mount it on an angle for a little visual interest.   Everything went onto a black card base which brought out the black in the bunny's tux and top hat.  The black bow is one of those I make by the dozens and keep in my stash for use as I need them.

  Bunny Love

Pitcher and Basin

     First of the month and time for another fantastic release of digi sets from Doodle Pantry.  Oh, there are some marvelous sets this month!  Of course, I think that every month, but these just seem especially wonderful this time.  :-D    My card is made using an image from the "Pitcher and Basin" set (photo of the entire set is at the end of this post), a classic vintage set.

     I actually remember my Grammy (in whose honor my blog is named) having a bowl and pitcher on the dressing table in her bedroom which she had used since her childhood.  I didn't inherit that set but I do have another set which I found in an antique store and bought because it was perfect in my Victorian house.  I colored the image to look as much like Grammy's set as possible.  Her set was white porcelain with a slight lavender tinge to it, and it did have flowers on the side of the pitcher and inside on the bottom of the basin.

I based this on the sketch at Scrapper's Delight this week.

     The image is colored with Promarkers, then die cut and edged with ink.  The background lattice work is a die cut from Spellbinders.  I added the purple, rhinestone & pearls flourish to the top corner and then piled on the flowers (in classic Vintage style) at the bottom corner.  I love the way this card turned out, and not just because of the purple. :-D

Encouraging Words at Perfect Sentiment Challenge

     I wasn't sure I was going to have a post today because of printer problems and a glitch in my camera's downloading software.  I couldn't get anything out of the camera and into the computer hard drive.  But that's resolved now, and so I get to tell you about the new challenge today over at Perfect Sentiment.  We have two magnificent sponsors this week; Crafty City, which will have a Gift Certificate for one winner (US only) and Pattie's Creations, which is giving away 3 free digis!

     For our theme, we want to see you do a card with a sentiment of encouragement for someone and also use ribbon.  Pattie's Creations supplied images for the DT to use and I chose Mom and Baby Polar Bear for my card.  Nothing is more encouraging than a parent teaching a child.  :-D

My card is based on the sketch from Hanna and Friends this week.

     I feel like every card I've done in January is blue and white, but it's such a perfect color combo for anything depicting chilly weather.  Besides, my friend, Lynn, will absolutely love it!  She's the queen of blue combos.  :-D

     The snow/ice, sky, and dusty white on the bears are done using chalks, and the shadowing on the polar bears is done with markers.  The sentiment was printed with a computer font.  The ovals and circles are die cut and matted with black.  The papers are from my stash and I don't even know how long they've been there.  I used two different ribbons, layered together, and they are both from Really Reasonable Ribbon.  The flower embellishments are either hand punched and layered together or from my stash of Prima roses.

Back to School - Hookey !

     My youngest grandson starts school for the very first time this year and I was thinking of him when I did this card.  His dad is a great fisherman and I know that Wm would much rather be 'going fishing' than sitting in a class room.  So, for all the Back to School challenges I've entered this week, yes, I do consider this to be right in line with that theme.  :-D

I used the sketch I found over at MFP Speedy TV, sketch-with-a-twist, my first time playing there.  

     This week the twist is to use fabric and I used white felt for one of the die cuts that's folded (Spellbinders).  The other die cut (also folded) is paper from SU, as is the background dp.  Can you believe that it nearly killed me to dig that out of my hoard and cut into it?  Of course, you can!  You have things just like that, don't you?  Admit it!

     The stamp is from QKR Stampede -- ("End of Summer" challenge) and I think it's called "Gone Fishing."   When I finally got the QKR digis this morning, I was so excited!  I just thought this one was so adorable and perfect for that last minute fishing trip before summer ends (or for playing hookey -- lol).

     I used colors from the challenge at Just Add Ink.  I colored it with Copics this time, except the flashy bit of orange on the fishing bobber, which is florescent highlighter.   The twine is actually hemp cord.  I used a sparkly brad in the center of the folded die cuts for a bit of bling.  Again, I'm trying to get back to CAS but am finding it harder to leave off all the embellishments so a few find their way onto the cards.
