Arctic Christmas

We're back from our summer break over at Crafty Catz and our latest challenge has started.  Our theme for this week is "Getting Ready for Christmas."  You can create anything Christmas related.

I chose this fun clip art image, printed it in gray scale, and then used water colors, white pencil, and white gel pen to color the image.  I started with dark blue water color paint, and did the entire night sky, after masking the moon and polar bears.  I used a light gray on the ground, adding highlights to the gray scale.  I used a darker gray water color to emphasize the leaf branches at the very bottom.  I let that dry completely, overnight, and under a heavy book.

I found my polychromos pencils and added highlights to the polar bears, the trees, and the moon.  I added yellow and aqua pencil rings around the moon, getting lighter and less distinct the further away from the moon. I blended those rings with gamsol.  Finally, I grabbed a white gel pen and added bright highlights to the treetops, plus a few strokes on the bears, and to create the snowflakes/stars.  I added a bit of sparkle gel pen to the tree tops and snow but it doesn't show very well in the photo.

The sentiment was printed using my Word program, setting the text in yellow and the background in deep blue.  Once printed, I cut it with a die from Avery Elle.  I wanted a completely CAS card so I added no embellishment of any kind.  I understand that if you are a purist who demands lots of 'white' space for CAS, you'll be disappointed in this card.  But I wanted the scene to be the main feature and that meant lots of night sky instead of lots of white space.  :-D

     Challenges:
Christmas Bingo (CAS/free/Hand color)

Come play with us.  It's already a week into September and you need to get a start on your Christmas cards.  Remember last year when you swore to yourself not to wait until the last minute to get started?  Unh huh, I thought so.  Use our challenge as an inspiration and then enter your cards in our challenge.  :-D  Happy Crafting.  NanaConnie

Ice Fishing

Most of you who follow my blog regularly already know that I'm having some vision problems which affect my ability to color images and, while I'm figuring out ways to color successfully - enlarging images so that I can see them well enough to color, then photographing and reducing them with my photo editing software - I've also found that using die cuts to make the entire card is another way to continue with my love of card making.

Today's card uses a die set from Cuts to create this fun ice fishing card.  The glitter paper (for the hole in the ice, the frozen fish, and the strip under the bears) is from Recollections, and dp for the sky came from a DCWV stack.  I used my Linen embossing folder on the blue CS.  Everything was done using scraps.  The sentiment was made with another Cuts die.

I used the Tic Tac Toe board at Outlawz Color challenge
to do blue sky, white, and snow from the right hand column.
(Sorry, I can't seem to copy and paste their board)

Polar Bear Present

Good morning, Friends.  Today is the beginning of our final 2020 "Anything Goes" challenge over at QKR Stampede and it will run until the end of the month.  We'll see you again on January 1 so let me wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Remember, for QKR challenges you are not required to use a QKR Stampede image but if you do, or if you use one from our sister company, Eureka stamps, your card will be put into a separate draw with others who have also used QKR/Eureka images and your chances of winning will be greatly increased.  :-D

I've used a QKR sentiment called "I Know Santa" and a Eureka image called "Polar Bear Present."

This is really a very CAS card - the image is cut with a fancy die and mounted onto a pre-made card blank.

Polar Bear Christmas

Today's card is another salute to recycling instead of tossing away.  I've been working on the Christmas images my friend mailed to me a month ago and that made me remember a box of old cards which I had saved because I thought some of them could be recycled into other cards.

I found a card with this image of the mama polar bear and her two cubs.  It was already colored but I wanted a snowier look so I took a white gel pen and added all the snowflakes to the bears and more snow to the trees, then used white chalk and a Q-tip to add another layer of white over the entire thing.  The white chalk softened the image and even gave it more depth.  Unfortunately, it didn't photograph as well as I had hoped, regardless of how many different shots and angles I tried.

I inked the edges of the image and then played with different background colors, first trying blue and gray.  But when I laid the image onto bright, Christmas-red, CS, I knew that was the perfect choice.  :-D

I found the glittered, gold mesh, ribbon in my stash and added a strip of it the red background piece before layering on the image.  I tied one of my "bow tie" bows from red satin ribbon and added it.  The sentiment is heat embossed, as are the tiny, gold snowflakes.  A rather CAS design but one which is definitely 'finished.'

Did you all have a wonderful weekend?  I did.  I'm facing a really busy week this week, doing all the last minute things necessary to get my younger granddaughter off to the national Cheer Championships in Florida.  We're hoping the wildfire situation won't have too great an impact or that the fires will have been put out by the time she and her team have to be there.  I've been saying prayers for all my friends who live in Florida that all is well for them despite the fires.  Happy Stamping.  NanaConnie

Mama's Girls

We're starting a new challenge at Ike'sworld Challenges and we have an "Anything Goes" theme to make these early January days easy for you.  I adore this polar bear family drawn by Ike!

The colors are perfect for the challenge at Great Impressions.

I colored the image with my Pro-Markers and then cut it with a Double Running Stitch die by STAMPlorations.   I've had this set of dies for a while now and the die is actually a rectangle but I needed a square, so I cut the image once, then moved the die up and cut the bottom off to make a square,  I love inventing new ways to use my dies!  :-D

The dp is digital paper and I simply can't remember what digi stamp company created it so if you recognize it, please leave me a comment and tell me.  I'd love to give proper credit.  It's old paper I printed out some time ago and had left over from another project.  It was the exact size I needed for the background on this card so I used it instead of throwing it away.

The silver snowflake embellie was made by cutting 3 layers of CS with a brand new die from Spellbinders,   I used dimensional dots to separate the die cut layers and attach them to the card front.  The top layer is silver and white stripe CS, made sparkly with extremely fine glitter, and the other layers are plain white.

As this post goes live, the Christmas and New Year holidays are officially over and behind us for another year.  For me, that means I will be back and into my usual routine making cards and posting more regularly than I did during December.  I hope Santa treated you well and that you had a warm and wonderful New Year.  Happy Stamping.  NanaConnie
